Mavericks beat Heat 96-89

DALLAS (AP) – Seth Curry scored 29 points, Harrison Barnes added 24 and Dallas handed Miami its third loss in 19 games.

The Mavericks rallied from 14 points down in the first quarter and let an 11-point third-quarter lead get away.

Two games after scoring a career-high 31 points in a loss at Minnesota, Curry was 5 of 7 from long range to help the Mavericks improve to 2-0 with forward-center Nerlens Noel, who came from Philadelphia before the trade deadline.

Goran Dragic scored 24 points for the Heat, who went scoreless over the final 4:37 as a three-game winning streak ended.

Lightning beat Senators 5-1

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) – Nikita Kucherov scored three power-play goals in the second period and Tampa Bay kept its fading playoff hopes alive with a victory over Ottawa.

Kucherov had the second hat trick of his career and added an assist in the third period. Jonathan Drouin assisted all three of his goals and Victor Hedman assisted on two.

A day after trading goaltender Ben Bishop to Los Angeles and just hours after trading forward Brian Boyle to Toronto, the Lightning improved to 6-1-2 over their past nine games.

Kurt Busch wins his first Daytona 500 with last-lap pass

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- His car damaged in a wreck on the backstretch and held together with tape, Kurt Busch grabbed the lead on the final lap of the 59th Daytona  500 on Sunday and took the checkered flag in the Great American Race as a capstone to a checkered career that has trended upward since Busch joined Stewart-Haas Racing in 2014.

In a race that featured the first test of a new three-stage race format in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series -- and featured enough twisted sheet metal to keep fabricators busy for a month -- Busch surged to the front with a run around the outside when more than half the vehicles in an 11-car lead draft sputtered and ran short on fuel.

Having pushed other drivers to victory in the 500 on three previous occasions, Busch took the prize himself this time, finishing .228 seconds ahead of Ryan Blaney, who came from the rear of the lead pack on the final two laps.

AJ Allmendinger ran third after conserving fuel over the final 20 laps, as a race that had produced eight caution flags for 40 laps ran green for the final 47 circuits. Aric Almirola finished fourth as a single car for Richard Petty Motorsports, with Paul Menard and Joey Logano coming home fifth and sixth, respectively.

"I can't believe it!" Busch shouted on his team radio after claiming the 29th victory of his career and by far the most significant. "I love you guys! Thank you! Thank you!"

Busch lost his rear view mirror in the middle of the final green-flag run, but it didn't matter.

"There is nothing predictable about this race any more, and the more years that have gone by that I didn't win I kept trying to go back to patterns that I had seen in the past," Busch said. "My mirror fell off with 30 laps to go and I couldn’t even see out the back. And I thought that was an omen. Throw caution to the wind.

"It just got crazy and wild, and I am so proud of all the drivers at the end. We put on a show for a full fuel run, and nobody took each other out and it was one of the smartest chess games I have seen out there. All the hard work that Ford and SHR put into this -- this Ford Fusion is in Daytona's Victory Lane!"

Busch did what other drivers with seemingly stronger cars could not. Pole winner Chase Elliott was disconsolate after running out of fuel on the white-flag lap. He finished 14th.

Kyle Busch won the first 60-lap stage and collected the first playoff point in series history, but on Lap 105, he spun in Turn 3 when he cut a rear tire and collected fellow Toyota drivers Erik Jones and Matt Kenseth, as well as Dale Earnhardt Jr., who was returning to competition after missing the final 18 races of the 2016 season while recovering from a concussion.

Busch fell out of the race in 38th place. Earnhardt took his car to the garage in 37th.

Kevin Harvick led 50 of the 200 laps and took the second stage, but he fell victim on Lap 128 to the 17-car pileup on the backstretch that also did the most damage to the sheet metal on Kurt Busch's car.  The 2014 series champion finished 22nd, three laps down.

Busch's team owner, Tony Stewart, retired from Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series competition at the end of the 2016 season. Stewart-Haas spent the winter converting from Chevrolet to Ford, but it seemed to make little difference to Busch, who won his 2004 series championship in a Roush Fenway Racing Ford.

"It was a crazy race, even crazier to sit and watch it from a pit box finally," Stewart said. "If I had known all I had to do was retire, I would have retired 17 years ago, if I knew it was what it took to win the race ... I ran this damn race for 18 years and didn't win it.

"Kurt did an amazing job. He doesn't even have a rear view mirror. The mirror folded on him. His spotter, Tony Raines, did an amazing job. That is the most composed I have ever seen Kurt at the end of a race. He deserved this."

Ryan Reed wins 'Big One'-filled XFINITY Series opener

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- For Ryan Reed, there's magic in the air at the Birthplace of Speed.

Reed went to Victory Lane at Daytona International Speedway in February 2015 and hadn't won since -- until Saturday night, when he held off Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series veteran Kasey Kahne in overtime to claim victory in the Powershares QQQ 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series season opener.

With the race going four laps past its scheduled distance of 120 laps, and with the series running NASCAR's new three-stage event format for the first time, Reed blocked Kahne in Turn 2 on the first of two overtime laps and stalled his momentum.

From that point on, Reed stayed out front and got to the finish line .219 seconds ahead of Kahne, with Austin Dillon a close third and Brad Keselowski and Brendan Gaughan fourth and fifth, respectively.

Reed's triumph was a welcome start to the season for Roush Fenway Racing, which suffered through a winless season in 2016.

"I'm just so excited," Reed said in Victory Lane. "I knew if I could run two perfect laps (in overtime) with however many blocks I had to do in those two laps, I'd be standing here."

In a race that produced 10 cautions, one short of the event record, 20 of the 40 cars were running at the finish. Only three cars escaped damaged from a succession of major wrecks—those of Kahne, Ty Dillon (who ran out of gas on the first overtime lap) and David Starr (who dropped out after four laps with engine issues).

The driver who got the worst end of the accident toll was Elliott Sadler, who led a race-high 40 laps and won the first two stages under caution (earning one playoff point for each) before clobbering the backstretch wall on Lap 104 in a 16-car accident.

Sadler was credited with a 24th-place finish but managed to hold third in the series standings, thanks to points earned in the first two stages. Reed leaves Daytona with a nine-point lead over second-place Brendan Gaughan, with Sadler 14 back.

"Man, that was a heck of a race," Gaughan said. "What a run to get back to the top five! Me and Austin -- we were beasts coming through the field.

Before the race reached the end of the 30-lap first stage, the event had been red-flagged twice for a pair of massive wrecks that eliminated more than a handful of drivers expected to contend for the series championship.

Before the race reached the end of the 30-lap first stage, the event had been red-flagged twice for a pair of massive wrecks that eliminated more than a handful of drivers expected to contend for the series championship.

On Lap 23, Scott Lagasse Jr. turned the No. 42 Chevrolet of Tyler Reddick across traffic on the backstretch, causing a colossal chain-reaction pileup that involved 20 cars -- literally half the field. That wreck knocked out Cole Custer in his debut in the No. 00 Stewart-Haas Racing Ford, as well as Sunoco rookie Spencer Gallagher in the No. 23 GMS Racing Chevrolet.

"My bad," Lagasse said on his radio in perhaps the tersest apology ever for a mistake that damaged that many cars.

As drivers jockeyed for position on Lap 29, rookie Daniel Hemric hit a patch of “speedy-dry” from the first wreck -- which he described as "like driving on ice" -- and washed up the track into the left rear of Justin Allgaier's Chevrolet, triggering a crash that involved 13 cars.

The melee damaged the cars of Hemric, Allgaier, Erik Jones, Darrell Wallace Jr., pole winner Brandon Jones and 2016 series champion Daniel Suarez beyond repair.

"I feel like we were racing too hard," said Suarez, who is running for points in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series this season. "It's too early. I don't really know what happened exactly. I haven't seen the replay slowly.

"I feel like we have to be a little bit smarter than that. I just feel like it's a long race, and we should be a little bit more smart."

Reed was involved in three of the accidents, including the Lap 104 incident, but recovered to win the race.

"I started out pretty aggressive and made some mistakes and ended up in the back of the pack," said Reed, who suffers from Type 1 diabetes. "I knew if I was there at the end it doesn't matter where you are at, you will have a shot.

"I reminded myself of that, took a deep breath, bided my time and found my way to the front at the end. Everyone was so aggressive. This new format is breeding a lot of aggression -- there’s a ton of incentive." Kaz Grala sneaks by last-lap 'Big One' for win at Daytona

Reid Spencer
NASCAR Wire Service

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- In the space of 100 laps, Kaz Grala went from youngest NASCAR national series pole winner at Daytona International Speedway to youngest NASCAR national series race winner at Daytona.

What happened between the first green flag and the checkers, however, could fill volumes.

Miraculously, Grala slipped through a wild wreck on the backstretch on the final lap of Friday night's NextEra Energy Resources 250 to win the first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race contested in stages under NASCAR's new competition format.

That final wreck, ignited when Ben Rhodes spun from the outside lane off the bumper of ThorSport Racing teammate Grant Enfinger, wiped out veteran contenders Johnny Sauter, Timothy Peters and Matt Crafton.

But Grala -- 18 years, 1 month and 26 days old -- drove through the melee as trucks bounced off each other like pinballs on either side of him. Grala claimed the trophy for his first national series victory and the five playoff points that go with a race win under NASCAR's new scoring system.

Austin Wayne Self took the runner-up spot, followed by Chase Briscoe, and the father-son combination of John Hunter Nemechek and Joe Nemechek in fourth and fifth.

"That was freaking awesome! I can't believe we won Daytona," Grala said in Victory Lane. "I couldn't see a lot there. I knew it was a little bit risky. It was the last lap, and we had to do what we had to do.

"I saw coming out of (Turn) 2 it starting to get crazy. There wasn't going to be any way I was going to be lifting (off the accelerator). I was just going to go low, cross my fingers and close my eyes a little bit.

"Luckily, it worked out for me. I just can't believe it. It's so surreal."

Self put it much more succinctly.

"When all hell broke loose, we were in the right spot."

The race didn't wait until the last lap to get crazy. On the second lap, Briscoe, racing for the first time in the Truck Series, gave Noah Gragson's Toyota an off-center tap on the rear bumper, sending Gragson bouncing off the outside wall in Turn 1 and out of control.

By the time the smoke cleared, 17 trucks -- one more than half the field -- had sustained varying degrees of damage in the wreck.

Gragson, Austin Cindric and Ryan Truex couldn't continue. Same for Ross Chastain and Clay Greenfield. John Hunter Nemechek stayed on the lead lap but fell victim to a flat tire as Stage 2 of the race came to an end with Sauter in the lead.

"I took a few hard hits out there," said Gragson, who was unhurt in the wreck. "Just a bummer. I didn't want to end the race like this, but I had a good time for the lap I got.

"Felt like the 29 (Briscoe) hit me in the wrong part of the bumper going through the tri-oval. It just got me loose, and it got pointed into the outside wall."

In the final 60-lap stage, all four GMS Chevrolet pitted early on Lap 68. Though Spencer Gallagher and ultimate sixth-place finisher Scott Lagasse Jr. drew speeding penalties while exiting pit road, Sauter reclaimed the lead, with Grala trailing him, when Christopher Bell's Toyota got loose in Turn 4, slowed and spun off the bumper of Timothy Peters' Tundra.

Sauter, the defending series champion, looked to be in control of the race until John Hunter Nemechek's spin off Turn 2 on Lap 95 of 100 caused the fifth and final caution and set up a chaotic two-lap run to the finish.

Wrecked on the backstretch, Sauter was credited with a 15th-place finish but collected two playoff points for winning both the first and second stages, each lasting 20 laps.

Bell, one of the preseason favorites for the championship, sustained heavy damage in three wrecks, including the last one, but his seemingly indestructible No. 4 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota Tundra made it to the finish line in eighth-place, salvaging a respectable result from a potentially disastrous night.

Russell scores in 3rd to lift Oilers over Panthers, 4-3

By TIM REYNOLDS
AP Sports Writer

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- The last time Edmonton lost a road game at Florida, Connor McDavid was 5 years old.

He's 20 now. And he wasn't about to let the streak end just yet.

McDavid helped set up Kris Russell's winner with 7:58 left, and the Oilers beat Florida 4-3 on Wednesday to snap the Panthers' five-game winning streak.

"Happy that the leaders took care of a few things," said Oilers coach Todd McLellan, who lauded his team for a bounce back after a lackluster effort Tuesday in a loss to Tampa Bay. "We got tremendous games from guys that had a lot of trouble last night."

McDavid carried the puck into the Florida zone on the right wing before sending it over to Leon Draisaitl. He tapped it to Russell, who came down the left side almost unnoticed for what became his first goal since Feb. 11, 2016 - when he played for Calgary.

Fellow defenseman Oscar Klefbom also scored for Edmonton, as did Zack Kassian and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. The Oilers played half the game without defenseman Andrej Sekera, who suffered what McLellan called a soft-tissue or muscle injury and will be evaluated again Thursday.

"They're playing real well right now," Russell said of the Panthers. "And I thought we answered well."

Aleksander Barkov, Colton Sceviour and Jonathan Marchessault scored for Florida. Keith Yandle had two assists for the Panthers, giving him 400 points for his career.

"Lot of good stuff," Panthers coach Tom Rowe said. "Last 11 games, we're 8-2-1. ... We're going to look at the positives. I thought there was a lot of good stuff. It was a good game. We just didn't get the bounces."

Cam Talbot stopped 31 shots for the Oilers, who have won their last eight games at Florida - last losing on the Panthers' ice in 2002. James Reimer made 31 saves for the Panthers, who just completed a 5-0-0 road trip.

The Panthers trailed for 93 seconds on their five-game road trip. They trailed for the final 14:42 of the first period alone in this one, after Klefbom's unassisted goal opened the scoring.

From there, the trend of the night emerged: Edmonton would lead, and Florida would come back. It worked three times - but not a fourth.

"Got to give them credit," Yandle said. "They played well. Their goalie played well. Talbot played well. Just one of those things where a mistake here and there kind of cost us."

Florida knotted the game on a power-play goal from Barkov 21 seconds into the second period. Kassian made it 2-1 midway through the second on a goal that was originally credited to Eric Gryba, only to have Sceviour answer for Florida five minutes later. And when it seemed like Edmonton would take a 3-2 lead into the third period, the Oilers quickly gave the advantage back.

Nugent-Hopkins' goal off a rebound with 1:01 left in the second gave Edmonton its third lead, but Matt Hendricks was whistled for holding five seconds later. And just as it did to start the period, Florida finished the second by cashing in on the man advantage - with Marchessault scoring with four seconds left to send the teams into the final 20 minutes tied yet again.

"We did a really good job of not letting up," Nugent-Hopkins said. "They pushed back a lot but we found a way to get it done."

NOTES: The two leading scorers in NHL history were at the game - No. 1 Wayne Gretzky appeared on the Panthers' telecast during the first intermission, and No. 2 Jaromir Jagr was on the ice for Florida. ... Not only was Wednesday the 37th anniversary of the U.S. Olympic hockey team's 4-3 "Miracle on Ice" upset of the Soviet Union in Lake Placid, it was the 19th anniversary of Jagr and the Czech Republic beating Russia 1-0 for the gold medal at the Nagano Games. ... Trocheck left the game with an upper-body injury in the second period but returned in the third. ... Talbot has appeared in more games (54) than any goalie this season.

Trocheck's late goal lifts Panthers past Blues, 2-1

By DAVID SOLOMON
Associated Press

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Vincent Trocheck scored with just under 5 seconds remaining to lift the Florida Panthers to a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Monday night.

Jonathan Marchessault also scored and James Reimer stopped 26 shots to help the Panthers complete a 5-0 road trip - their first perfect trip of at least that many games in franchise history.

Reimer has won five straight decisions and has not lost in regulation since Jan. 7 against Boston, going 6-0-1 since.

The Panthers moved into a tie with Boston for third place in the Atlantic Division, but have the edge because they have a game in hand on the Bruins.

Kyle Brodziak, playing for the second time after missing 10 games due to a broken foot, scored for the Blues and Jake Allen finished with 31 saves. St. Louis lost its second straight since winning six in a row.

Marchessault opened the scoring when he beat Allen short side for his 17th goal of the season in the middle of the first period.

Brodziak tied about three minutes into the second when he put Ryan Reaves' rebound past Reimer for his seventh.

Trocheck won it with his team-leading 21st.

St. Louis dominated the offensive action in the first period, outshooting Florida 12-8. The Panthers then outshot the Blues 25-15 the rest of the way.

St. Louis dropped to 7-3 under Mike Yeo and remains third in the Central Division, three points ahead of Nashville.

NOTES: St. Louis C Paul Stastny returned after missing four games with a lower-body injury. ... St. Louis LW Alexander Steen played his 800th career NHL game. ... Florida D Keith Yandle played in his 609th consecutive game, the second longest active streak in the NHL. ... Trocheck has scored a point in six consecutive games.

Roussel has hat trick, Benn lifts Stars over Lightning in OT

By ASSOCIATED PRESS

DALLAS (AP) -- Antoine Roussel might be buying lunch for his Dallas Stars teammates for a while.

The fan favorite netted his first career hat trick, captain Jamie Benn scored 3:47 into overtime and the Stars rallied to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 4-3 on Saturday night.

"He bought lunch today, so I think he's going to have to do that again," Benn said.

Tampa Bay dominated early in overtime, with the first four shots on goal. But then Benn took the puck away in the Dallas end, bounced off a hit, passed to Cody Eakin and took a return drop pass before sending a shot past Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy for his 20th goal.

"Just for the three guys to get up ice and make the play, I thought they made a good play," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said, "and Jamie hit a shot."

Dallas goalie Kari Lehtonen held Tampa Bay scoreless for the final 34 minutes, with 15 of his 34 saves coming in the third period and overtime.

"We did everything we could in overtime," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "We couldn't put (the puck) behind their guy. They got their one chance, and it had to be on one of the best player in the league's stick."

The Stars won for the first time this season when trailing after two periods. They are 1-22-2 in those situations, and 3-9 in overtime.

Roussel, popular in Dallas primarily because he leads the NHL with 115 penalty minutes, scored the team's first three goals as the Stars came back from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2. His first two came six minutes apart in the first period, and his third tied the game 3-all at 4:40 of the third.

"It was awesome. It was fun to watch," Benn said. "All that hard work paid off."

Tyler Seguin assisted on all three of Roussel's goals.

"It feels pretty good," Roussel said. "Our main focus before the game was we had to work hard, and everything's going to come to us and basically that's what happened."

Victor Hedman had two goals and an assist for Tampa Bay. Tyler Johnson added a goal and an assist.

Dallas, last in the NHL in penalty killing, allowed goals on both Lightning power plays.

Both teams are fighting to get into playoff position. The Lightning entered six points and six teams removed from the Eastern Conference's second wild card. Dallas was seven points and three teams away from a postseason berth.

Roussel's first goal came off a backhand pass from Dan Hamhuis that Roussel redirected past Vasilevskiy, who finished with 24 saves.

At 18:50 of the first period, Seguin passed from the slot to Roussel on the left.

On Roussel's third goal, Seguin passed from behind the goal line to his teammate in the middle of the left faceoff circle.

NOTES: The Stars have given up at least one power-play goal in 19 of their past 23 games. ... Hedman, one of the NHL's top defensemen, has four three-point games this season. He has had three regular-season games with two goals in his eight NHL seasons, most recently on Nov. 27, 2013, vs. Philadelphia. ... Roussel has scored multiple goals three times in his five seasons, including twice in 2013-14. ... In his last 11 games against Tampa Bay, Seguin has 15 points (five goals, 10 assists). ... Johnson missed the Lightning's previous two games because of a lower-body injury. ... Vasilevskiy had won his first two games against the Stars. ... Dallas RW Adam Cracknell left in the third period favoring his right leg after Johnson checked him into the boards. "It looks fairly serious," Ruff said. . Stars play-by-play broadcaster Dave Strader called his first game this season after undergoing cancer treatment. "This win is really for him," Roussel said. "He's going to be our good-luck charm."

UP NEXT

Lightning: Travel to Colorado for the last of four straight road games on Sunday. This is the first of five back-to-back road games remaining on Tampa Bay's schedule.

Stars: After a five-day break for their bye week, they'll play the second of five games in a row at home on Friday against Arizona.

Panthers in playoff position after 3-2 win over Kings

By DAN GREENSPAN
Associated Press

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Florida Panthers' offense keeps on firing. It's the defense, though, that has them back in the playoff picture.

Aleksander Barkov scored the go-ahead goal 15 seconds into the third period, Roberto Luongo made 33 saves and the Panthers beat the Los Angeles Kings 3-2 on Saturday night for their fourth straight win.

Jussi Jokinen and Jonathan Huberdeau also scored for the Panthers, who have won seven of eight. Florida is tied with Boston for third in the Atlantic Division and leads Toronto for the second wild card in the Eastern Conference by one point.

"The playoff race in the East is so darn close, there is a lot to play for, but what we're really happy about is how we get the goal, obviously, on the first shift and played real solid defense the rest of the way," Florida interim head coach Tom Rowe said.

To start the third, Barkov raced ahead of three Kings and put a backhand shot past Peter Budaj, reclaiming momentum and the lead after Los Angeles had roared back to tie it in the second period.

From there, the Panthers protected their advantage with a sound, smothering defense that had been lacking for part of the season.

"They always respond, it's a real good group that way," Rowe said. "A lot of offense, we know we're always going to get chances and capitalize on them, but the big thing is now we're learning how to shut things down and close teams out."

The Panthers' penalty kill has done that throughout the season and stifled three Los Angeles power plays and allowed four shots total. Jokinen credited the overall improvement to improved health.

"We got our players back. Everybody is playing the minutes and the roles they were supposed to play early in the year," said Jokinen, who put the Panthers ahead 2-0 1:14 into the second before the Kings roared back to tie it in the same period.

Dwight King and Tanner Pearson each scored and Budaj made 22 saves for the Kings, who are two points behind Calgary for the second wild card in the Western Conference.

King scored 5:39 into the second. Luongo couldn't handle his shot with Kings center Nick Shore and Panthers defenseman Alex Petrovic crashing the crease, and Rowe challenged unsuccessfully for interference.

Pearson then got Luongo moving to his left with some clever puck handling, exploiting the subsequent gap between the goalie's legs to score his 19th of the season and third in as many games.

"We chased the lead again," Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. "Battled back, played hard. We were a little short on a couple of forwards, shortened the bench a little too much."

The first period turned on a delayed penalty against Los Angeles' Marian Gaborik. The Kings had held the puck in the offensive zone for nearly a minute before losing it, prompting Gaborik to reach out his stick and trip a Panther in a fruitless attempt to get it back.

Huberdeau then beat Budaj with a wrist shot in the 6-on-5 action, notching his fourth goal of the season in his sixth game, after the Panthers were able to steady themselves by getting Luongo off and bringing on an extra attacker.

"We have some grit and we showed that in this game," Huberdeau said.

NOTES: Vincent Trocheck had an assist for the fifth straight game, giving him seven points in that span. Jaromir Jagr also extended his points streak to five games with an assist on Barkov's goal. ... The Kings fell to 9-20-2 this season when giving up the first goal. ... Budaj has now given up 19 goals in his last five starts.

Aldridge, Leonard help Spurs rout short-handed Magic, 107-79

By TERRANCE HARRIS
Associated Press

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) -- It's hard for LaMarcus Aldridge to explain why, but he was out of rhythm during the first five games of San Antonio's current road trip.

His shot wasn't falling consistently and something just seemed off.

But the Spurs' power forward found his groove Wednesday night, shooting 10 of 13 from the floor for a game-high 23 points to spark a 107-79 win over the short-handed Orlando Magic as both teams headed into the All-Star break.

"I work hard and I get in the gym, so I'm not worried about not working hard," Aldridge said. "It just happens, but I stuck with it and played more comfortable tonight."

A big reason for that might have been the matchup issues the Magic faced against the 6-foot-11 Aldridge without Serge Ibaka to help out. Orlando traded its power forward to Toronto on Tuesday for Terrence Ross and a 2017 first-round draft pick.

That left a smaller Jeff Green to try to match up on Aldridge early, and then the Magic attempted to put center Nikola Vucevic on him but he couldn't step out and guard Aldridge on the perimeter. Aldridge hit his first two shots and scored eight of the Spurs' first 12 points in the first six minutes of a game that was never close.

"For sure, especially when I miss the easy ones," Aldridge said when asked if making the first couple of shots made it easier for him. "I make the first couple and then I start playing like myself and start taking shots that I take. Tonight I looked more like myself."

The Spurs (43-13), second in the Western Conference, looked like themselves in every way, playing lock-down defense and unselfishly on offense. San Antonio limited the Magic to 39.5 percent shooting and forced them into 17 turnovers.

The Spurs moved the ball and consistently made the extra pass to find the open man. That was often on the interior as Kawhi Leonard, Dewayne Dedmon and Aldridge took advantage of an Orlando team that didn't have enough big bodies to match up.

Leonard finished with 22 points and Dedmon added 10 points and 11 rebounds to help the Spurs lead by as many as 30 points.

"In some ways it wasn't a fair fight," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, whose team is 4-2 on its current road trip that continues in Los Angeles next week after the break. "They lost Serge and didn't have a replacement here for him. So they were a little bit overmatched and that certainly helped us out."

The Magic (21-37), who have made a concerted effort to shift to a smaller lineup in midseason, looked even more disjointed offensively than normal without their second-leading scorer on the floor. Ross did not dress because Ibaka had not completed his physical in time to make the trade official.

Orlando's offense had no rhythm, with leading scorer Evan Fournier having an off night with nine points on 6-of-11 shooting and four turnovers. Vucevic led three Magic players in double figures with 16 points and 10 rebounds as the team fell to 9-18 at home.

"They have the kind of defense that forces you into 1-on-1 play and we're more of a ball-movement team when we're at our best, not an isolation team," Orlando coach Frank Vogel said. "We tried to force into spots that weren't there and were careless with our turnovers and it was very, very costly."

TIP-INS

Spurs: Aldridge had 13 points in the first quarter while shooting 6 of 7 from the field. ... Popovich said he expects Pau Gasol (left hand) to return after the All-Star break. ... Manu Ginobili left in the third quarter after falling awkwardly and then grabbing the back of his left heel. Popovich said he wasn't sure what the extent of the injury was immediately after the game.

Magic: Green moved into the starting lineup at power forward in place of Ibaka. Green, who is 6-foot-9, started out guarding the 6-foot-11 Aldridge. ... Starting point guard C.J. Watson injured his Achilles during the second quarter and did not return.

TRADE OFFICIAL

It was announced during the second quarter that the Magic-Raptors trade had been officially approved by the NBA. Ross passed his physical earlier in the day but was inactive because Ibaka had yet to complete his physical in Toronto. Ibaka passed prior to the game, but it was too late to activate Ross.

UP NEXT

Spurs: San Antonio is in the middle of playing eight consecutive road games, with the final two on tap after the break. The Spurs don't play again until Feb. 24 at the Los Angeles Clippers.

Magic: Orlando, in a stretch of five straight home games, hosts Portland on Feb. 23.

Whiteside helps Heat beat Rockets 117-109

By JORDAN GODWIN
Associated Press

HOUSTON (AP) -- Hours after getting a pep talk from former Heat center Alonzo Mourning, Hassan Whiteside came through with a big game on both ends of the court.

Whiteside had 23 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks to help Miami beat the Houston Rockets 117-109 on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old Whiteside said Mourning called him in the morning and told him he wanted to see him block as many shots as he could.

Heat coach Erik Spoelstra liked what he saw from his young 7-footer.

"When he plays with that level of physicality and effort and focus, it's plain to see that we are a much different basketball team," Spoelstra said. "He played at his highest level, imposing his size and physicality on both sides of the court."

Dion Waiters added 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Goran Dragic had 21 points for the Heat, who ended a two-game skid that followed a 13-game win streak. Miami got back to winning by defeating the same team where that long winning streak started Jan. 17.

"Guys are coming together," Whiteside said. "Guys are a family and our hearts are in the right place. We've been jelling."

Dating back to last season, Whiteside has recorded at least 20 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in a game eight times. Entering the day, no other player had more than three such games over that span.

"When you have a big fellow behind you and you know that he's going to block the shot or at least he's going to contest it, it helps," Dragic said. "He just had an amazing night."

James Harden had 38 points 12 rebounds and 12 assists for his 15th triple-double of the season to lead the Rockets, who lost for the second time in seven games. For the first time all season, the Rockets played in a game where they never held a lead.

Miami shot 13 for 35 on 3-pointers, while Houston was 13 for 40. The Rockets have lost eight of 12 this season when failing to make more 3-pointers than their opponent and 36-10 when having more.

"We just didn't shoot the 3s at all in the first half and dug ourselves in a big hole," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said. "Then everything has to go right and you know, things don't go right, then the game's over. We're going to have clunkers and that was a clunker."

The Rockets' defense struggled without guard Patrick Beverley, who suffered a strained groin early in the second quarter. His backup, Corey Brewer, played 27 minutes and finished with four points.

Miami led 58-45 at halftime and built a lead as big as 20 points in the third quarter before Houston started making shots and trimmed the deficit late.

Spoelstra said the two straight losses entering Houston served as a timely eye-opener before the break.

"There's no easy way for this basketball team, but it started with everybody being open to the truth and holding each other accountable for the last two games," Spoelstra said. "That has to be how we have to play and commit to that."

Miami enters the break 25-32, two games behind Detroit for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

At 40-18, Houston holds the third spot in the West behind Golden State and San Antonio.

"We let a couple of games slip up, but we've got an opportunity for guys to get some rest and get their minds right and be ready to go for this push," Harden said.

TIP-INS

Heat: SG Josh Richardson remained sidelined with a sprained left foot but is expected to return for the first game after the All-Star break. ... Whiteside briefly greeted a courtside spectator, Rockets Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon at midcourt before the game.

Rockets: Harden was honored during a brief pregame ceremony for being a starter for the Western Conference in this weekend's All-Star Game at New Orleans. ... PF Ryan Anderson was called for a technical foul for yelling at an official late in the fourth quarter on a play in the paint where his shot was blocked by Whiteside.

BIG MEN GET NO RESPECT?

After being told that Carmelo Anthony was announced as the replacement for the injured Kevin Love on the Eastern Conference All-Star team, Whiteside said he was hopeful that a center would have been picked.

"Big men are always going to be a big part of the game," Whiteside said. "That's why I didn't understand that they took the center spot out. Whoever came up with that idea, I don't know why they came up with that."

OTIS HONORED

As part of the Rockets' ongoing celebration of the franchise's 50th season, the team honored former big man Otis Thorpe. In six seasons in Houston between 1988-89 and 1994-95, Thorpe won one championship and played in an All-Star Game, averaging 15.6 points and 9.5 rebounds per game during his time with the Rockets.

Panthers' Huberdeau scores in OT, Jagr gets 1,900th point

By RICK EYMER
Associated Press

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Jonathan Huberdeau needed overtime to extend his scoring streak and help celebrate Jaromir Jagr's birthday on a night the 45-year-old veteran reached another milestone.

Huberdeau scored 1:38 into overtime after San Jose's Joe Pavelski scored twice late in the third period to tie it, and the Florida Panthers beat the Sharks 6-5 on Wednesday night.

"It was a good offensive game," said Huberdeau, playing - and recording points - in his fourth game of the year for the Panthers. "We had a good forecheck down there and there were a lot of things open."

Jagr, second on the NHL's career points list behind Wayne Gretzky, had an assist for No. 1,900th. Sharks fans gave him a nice ovation.

Nick Bjugstad and Aleksander Barkov each scored twice for the Panthers, who have won five of six games. Jussi Jokinen also scored.

"It was a crazy game, back and forth. A lot of goals scored, a fun game to be part of and Hubie came up big there at the end," Bjugstad said. "It's not necessarily the games you want to get into at this point in the season, but we found a way."

Brent Burns, Joel Ward and Marc-Edouard Vlasic also scored for the Sharks, who have lost five of six.

Roberto Luongo stopped 29 of 34 shots for Florida and had to leave the game after cramping up with 38 seconds left in the third period. He was replaced by James Reimer, who stopped two shots.

Martin Jones made 16 saves for San Jose.

"We gave up too much," San Jose's Logan Couture said. "They're a team that feeds off of turnovers. In that first period, three turnovers by us, and three basically tap-ins for them and Jones didn't have a chance on any of them. That's on us. Whether that's the forwards or the D-men, we've got to be a lot tighter defensively."

Pavelski scored first with 3:21 left in the third, then tied it with 37.4 seconds left by firing in a loose puck from the slot. Luongo was injured on the latter goal.

The teams combined to score five times in 11 minutes during the first period.

Jokinen put the Panthers on the board less than five minutes into the game off a nice pass from Reilly Smith, but the Sharks tied it 30 seconds later. Pavelski picked off a lazy pass in the Panthers' zone and fed it to Burns, who fired a long-distance shot past Luongo.

Bjugstad scored his first goal after taking a long pass from Erik Ekblad. Barkov added his first goal two minutes later.

The Sharks rallied from the 3-1 deficit with goals by Ward and Vlasic before Pavelski missed a penalty shot.

Bjugstad and Barkov each added goals in the third period before Pavelski's rally.

NOTES: Burns' goal was his 300th point with the Sharks. ... Ekblad ended a seven-game run without a point, which matched his season high. ... Barkov has a goal in each of his last three games and a point in the four games he's played since returning from injury. ... Bjugstad has goals in back-to-back games for the first time this season. ... Sharks' F Kevin Labanc has four assists in the three games he's played since returning from a short stint in the AHL. He had one assist Wednesday.
